Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery - Redevelopment
Overview
In February 2006 TMAG presented a business case for the redevelopment of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. A project strategy was subsequently produced.
At the 2006 election, the State Government committed $30 million to cover the first stage of the project.
The project is governed by the Redevelopment Steering Committee with regular reports to the Trustees of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Trustees. There is a core Redevelopment Project team and staff provide input through reference groups and as expert advisors.
Peter Root and Associates Pty Ltd were appointed the Redevelopment Project Director in April 2007 after an open tender process.
Site investigations (archaeological desk top survey, geotechnical and hazardous materials investigations, and site survey) have been completed to inform future planning.
The Premier, David Bartlett, officially announced the appointment of Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW) who worked alongside Tasmanian-based architectural firm, Terroir, as the Masterplan team on 23 October, 2007.
A Masterplan was developed to provide a guide for TMAG through its redevelopment which will integrate the site, heritage buildings and collections. The Masterplan provides ideas on how the museum should be developed further after the initial $30 million investment. The Masterplan is a concept which has architectural principles but is not a set of architectural designs. It received overwhelming public support.
On the 8th October 2009 the Premier, David Bartlett, formally announced FJMT (Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp) as the successful tenderers for the Architectural Design phase. FJMT will do full concept design and then detailed design for stage one project funding confirmed at the completion of the concept design.
Work has also started on developing exhibition/program briefs and research for Stage One areas.
