Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery - Visitor Information

Free Guided Tours

Free guided tours are available Wednesday – Sunday at 2.30pm.

Groups depart from the main entry foyer and the tour goes for approximately 50 minutes.

During the tour you will learn about:

  • TMAG’s historic site and buildings
  • The Tasmanian Aboriginal Community
  • Early European Settlement
  • Life as a convict
  • The thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) and
  • The works of colonial artists including John Glover and Benjamin Duterrau

Huon Pine - Meet the Collector Tours

Tour TMAG's Huon Pine furniture collection with the collector, George Burrows. The 54 outstanding pieces span nearly 100 years of Tasmanian colonial history and are now part of the State collection. It is thought to contain the most significant example of Huon Pine furniture in the world. It was generously donated by the Museum of Old and New Art.

Curiosities of the Cottage Tours

The Private Secretary's Cottage is one of the treasures of the TMAG site. Built in approximately 1813 it could tell a myriad of stories about Tasmania's history. It is rarely open to the public but it contains interesting furniture, paintings and objects from the TMAG collection. George Burrows, an expert on colonial furniture and heritage buildings. will lead the tours.
