Important information

When visiting the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery we recommend, as per Department of Education guidelines, an adult/student ratio of:
  • 1 adult per every 5 students for primary school groups
  • 1 adult per every 10 students for secondary groups
This will ensure a quality experience for your students.

If applicable, visit the Education Resources page and download the relevant teacher resources.

Groups are requested to enter through the courtyard gates.  Students' and teachers' bags can be left in the lockable bag storage cages in the courtyard. Please collect the key from the front desk (and return it after use). Toilet facilities are located beyond the large double glass doors.

If you have booked an Education Program an Education Officer will meet you in the Courtyard before the program start time.

If you are on a self-guided visit, please check in with the Front Desk and then enter your group through the same entrance towards the gallery areas you wish to visit.

Note the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is open daily from 10am-5pm, except Christmas Day, Good Friday and ANZAC Day.

Group leaders and accompanying adults are encouraged to actively enjoy the program and assist with the management of their group.

To ensure that your students and other visitors have an enjoyable experience, TMAG asks that you:
  • Talk to your students about appropriate behaviour, including voice volume, moving through the galleries and respecting other visitors
  • Remind them to touch only those objects they are invited to by either a TMAG employee or signage
  • Please keep your group together and ensure that students have adult supervision at all times
  • Brief students on the point of the excursion and where appropriate undertake pre and post-visit activities on the chosen theme
Photography is not permitted in the art and decorative arts galleries or the Ningenneh Tunapry exhibition. No food or drink is allowed within the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Thank you for booking a visit to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
