TMAG Courtyard

18/03/2008
Unearthing the Past
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is undertaking archaeological exploration to find the possible depth, extent and condition of underground storage vaults. These vaults were part of the 1820s Bond Store complex and figured as top security storage for early Hobart Town. To find these vaults archaeologists are digging pits in the TMAG Courtyard and outside the Watergate wall.

A rare giant squid washed up on Ocean Beach near Strahan on the state's west coast is now in the freezer at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
TMAG staff drove the body of the animal from Strahan to Hobart, arriving late Thursday afternoon.
The giant squid (Architeuthis) was discovered on Tuesday night in several pieces.
It weighs more than 150 kilograms and is believed to have been more than 7 metres long.

Colonial gem to remain in Tasmania
One of Australia’s most important pieces of colonial furniture will be added to the State Collection at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG).

A rare colonial double end couch, featuring Tasmanian blue gum and dating back to the early 1800s, was bought at auction last weekend by the Federal Group with support from the Art Foundation of Tasmania.

TMAG Director Bill Bleathman said it was an outstanding purchase and is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Tasmanian-made colonial pieces still in existence.

Mr Bleathman paid tribute to the Federal Group which paid $310,000 for the couch and will donate it to the museum.
