22 November 2005 Colonial gem to remain in Tasmania A rare colonial double end couch, featuring Tasmanian blue gum and dating back to the early 1800s, was bought at auction last weekend by the Federal Group with support from the Art Foundation of Tasmania. TMAG Director Bill Bleathman said it was an outstanding purchase and is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Tasmanian-made colonial pieces still in existence. Mr Bleathman paid tribute to the Federal Group which paid $310,000 for the couch and will donate it to the museum. |
