What will the redevelopment do?
A redeveloped Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will take the best parts of the Museum and Art Gallery’s history and heritage, making this more accessible to museum visitors than ever before. It will allow for expanded public programs, education programs, inspiring travelling exhibitions and new spaces to showcase more of TMAG’s State Collection.
The heritage buildings Tasmanians know and love, including the Bond Store and Commissariat Store, will be restored and opened up for visitors to enjoy. Archaeological artefacts that are currently hidden beneath the fringes of TMAG’s historic site will be revealed and interpreted in situ to tell a story of Tasmania’s history.
The redevelopment will create more than twice TMAG’s present display space, including a dedicated facility for travelling exhibitions that will enable TMAG to host international exhibitions of a standard never before seen in Tasmania.
The additional exhibition spaces will also allow TMAG to generate new public and education programs and to establish an intellectually accessible cultural facility that is focussed on new ideas and life-long learning.
The redevelopment will reaffirm TMAG as a national tourist destination, and will attract double present visitor numbers as Tasmanians and visitors alike enjoy the benefits of greater accessibility, new spaces and innovative programming.
The redevelopment will generate more than 1 700 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and the completed museum will annually return over $19 million to the Gross State Product.
