Policies

The Trustees of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery have developed policies relating to all areas of the institution.

The policies cover the acquisition and deaccession of items, and provide specific guidelines for the management and future development of the State Collection.

Acquisition policies apply to three broad collection areas of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery which are Fine and Decorative arts, Biodiversity and Cultural Heritage.

Items are acquired in reference to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery's acquisition policies which ensures all items are of significance and therefore enhance the State Collection.

The primary aim of the deaccession policies is to remove unfit or inappropriate items from the State Collection. This in turn reduces storage and maintenance costs and allows the collection to be more strategically developed.
