Artist in Residence 2015
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is pleased to announce contemporary Tasmanian artist Selena de Carvalho as its 2015 Learning and Discovery Artist in Residence.
Throughout January, Selena will work with audiences at TMAG to develop the next phase of her exciting project ‘The Evolutionary Straitjacket’, which responds to the serious issue of species extinction through playful karaoke performances involving dazzling costumes and carefully selected pop songs.
Selena has a strong background in participatory art projects and is inspired by exchanging knowledge, ideas and creativity with audiences of all ages.
The interdisciplinary nature of ‘The Evolutionary Straitjacket’ is perfect for TMAG as she will look at serious ecological issues through a really innovative and contemporary art practice – it’s quirky and fun, and a fantastic way to engage audiences at the museum over summer.
Selena will invite children, families and the general public to help her choose an extinct Tasmanian mammal and influence the design and construction of her next handmade costume, sharing her intriguing creative process every step of the way.
The Artist in Residence program at TMAG is a rare opportunity for the public to experience and contribute to the working process of a contemporary artist as she develops new work.
People of all ages, families with children particularly, are invited to visit Selena during regular open studio sessions, get hands on in workshops during the January School Holiday Program, and even become part of the project in four very special karaoke performance events.
Simultaneously, the residency will be thought-provoking and inspiring for TMAG staff and the local art community, who will have opportunities to connect with Selena professionally in order to open dialogue around participatory art practice with children in particular.
The Artist in Residence Program runs from 6 January until 1 February 2015, and is supported by Detached Cultural Organisation. A full public program schedule is available here.
