Discover the fascinating World of Butterflies at TMAG

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) invites visitors to explore the beauty, diversity and resilience of butterflies in a new exhibition, The World of Butterflies, which opened today.

Featuring hundreds of specimens from around the globe, presented in stunning themed displays, The World of Butterflies celebrates butterflies as bold survivors, clever mimics and masters of transformation.

TMAG Director Mary Mulcahy said visitors would discover how colour, camouflage and behaviour help butterflies survive.

“As Tasmania’s leading natural and cultural heritage organisation, TMAG plays a vital role in connecting audiences with science and natural history,” Ms Mulcahy said.

“Exhibitions like The World of Butterflies offer an inspirational and enriching experience for visitors.

“Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a science lover or simply captivated by the beauty of butterflies, this exhibition offers something for everyone,” she said.

The exhibition also traces the history of butterfly collecting, from 19th-century explorers to modern citizen scientists, and explores the role of scientific naming in understanding species and evolution.

It highlights the threats butterflies face today, including climate change and habitat loss, and what can be done to protect them.
