Planning your visit

TMAG provides a wonderful learning environment. With preparation and planning a visit can be a memorable event for students for years to come.

Booking

Please book your visit at least two weeks in advance by emailing tmag.bookings@tmag.tas.gov.au or phoning (03) 6211 4189.

Please provide the following information at the time of booking:

  • preferred dates (have at least two options)
  • the time you wish to visit (TMAG is open from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm)
  • the particular galleries or exhibitions you would like to visit, or the title of the TMAG led program you wish to experience 
  • number of students, teachers and adults attending. If you have a large group you need to separate students into groups of no more than 25
  • the grade of the students
  • the name of the supervising teacher, email address and phone number
  • contact details for the school or organisation.
  • Once a date is confirmed, we will send you a booking confirmation via email. On receipt of this information please check that all details are correct.  If not, contact us as soon as possible.

    If it is necessary to cancel your booking, please do so as early as possible.

    Preparation

  • brief students about the aims of the excursion and, where appropriate, undertake pre and post-visit activities on the chosen theme
  • talk with your students about appropriate behaviour, including voice volume, touching exhibits and respecting other visitors
  • a floor map can be obtained at front reception, 5 Argyle Street, Hobart.
  • we strongly recommend five primary students per adult and ten secondary students per adult.
  • Parking

  • buses and passenger vans can drop off and pick up students in Argyle Street, outside the Maritime Museum
  • car parking, including disabled parking, is available in the Dunn Street car park, council parking fees apply
  • On arrival

  • please enter through the Argyle Street entrance
  • level access for wheelchair users is available via the lower level entrance adjacent to the Argyle Street doors
  • wheelchairs are available free of charge at the lower level entrance
  • student bags should be left on the bus, however if necessary there is limited storage available at the front desk 
  • toilet facilities are located on the first floor
  • if you have booked an education program, an education officer will meet you in the foyer before the program start time.  
  • In the galleries

  • please ensure that students are supervised at all times
  • please use pencils, not pens
  • photography is permitted except sometimes in the art and decorative art galleries
  • no food or drink is allowed in the galleries
  • Meals

    During the redevelopment there is no area available for students to eat, however, Mawson Place is close by and may provide a suitable alternative. 

    The Museum Café is now located on the first floor via the Argyle Street entrance and is still available for purchasing beverages and light meals.

    Cost

    Admission is free. Where there is a program charge, an invoice will be sent to your school.
