Registration and Conservation

Registration

The Registration team is responsible for the documentation, management, and care of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) collections.

This includes maintaining detailed records of each item's provenance, condition, and location.

They oversee the acquisition and deaccessioning processes, ensuring legal and ethical standards are met. They handle loan agreements with other institutions, manage insurance policies, and coordinate shipping and handling for exhibitions.

Other responsibilities of the department include the implementation of conservation measures, and the monitoring of environmental conditions to preserve the collection.

Through meticulous record-keeping and logistical support, the registration team ensures the integrity and accessibility of the museum's collections.

Conservation

The Conservation team is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of artworks, artefacts and specimens.

Conservators assess the condition of items, perform treatments to stabilise and repair damage, and implement preventive measures to protect against future deterioration.

They conduct scientific analysis to understand the materials and techniques used in the creation of items, informing appropriate conservation methods.

Additionally, the team advises on environmental controls, such as light, temperature, and humidity, to ensure optimal storage and display conditions.

By combining expertise in science, art history and craftsmanship, conservators help maintain the integrity and longevity of cultural heritage for future generations.
