Apology to Tasmanian Aboriginal People

On Monday 15 February 2021, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) and the Royal Society of Tasmania (RST) delivered a paired Apology to the Aboriginal people of Tasmania for the pain, suffering and ongoing trauma their institutions have caused.

The event took place in the courtyard of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, presented by Brett Torossi, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Janet Carding, Director of TMAG and Matt King, Chair of RST’s Aboriginal Engagement Committee chaired the event, that was witnessed by almost one hundred invited guests including members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, members of the Board of Trustees of TMAG and of the Council of the RST, and members. Many also witnessed the Apology by live stream.

Rodney Gibbons and Michael Mansell, Tasmanian Aboriginal community members, each presented their responses, live, after the Apology.
