Coming Home – Kit Hiller

Christine (Kit) Hiller's practice is grounded in a deep connection to place, shaped by her life in Northwest Lutruwita/Tasmania and inspired by its landscapes, nature and communities, as well as experiences gathered through travels abroad.

Born in Nipaluna/Hobart in 1948 and trained at the Tasmanian School of Art, in Coming Home Hiller returns to the city where her artistic journey began. The exhibition brings together works from across Hiller's career, including her renowned depictions of Tasmania's flora and fauna, landscapes and a profound ongoing series of self-portraits – a motif she has consistently returned to over a period of 50 years.

Over a prolific career spanning four decades and over 100 public exhibitions, Hiller has worked across a diverse range of media, including watercolours and oils, printmaking, and dioramas. Her portraits have been shown in the Archibald Prize exhibition on five occasions, and she has won the Portia Geach Memorial Award for Women Portrait Painters three times. Hiller’s work is represented in major public and private collections throughout Australia. She is represented by Handmark Gallery, Hobart, and Australian Galleries, Melbourne and Sydney.
