Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural belongings made by Ancestors are held in more than two dozen institutions globally.
In 2021-22 twenty Tasmanian Aboriginal artists creatively responded to them.
Ancestral objects held in museums globally were loaned to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and exhibited alongside Aboriginal community members responses to them and their predicament, being held outside the Aboriginal community, some contemporary works were made by descendants of the original makers, generational reconnection across time and place.
taypani milaythina-tu – Return to Country was exhibited at TMAG from October 2022 – May 2023.
The project continues with ongoing Aboriginal community engagement with the loaned Ancestral objects towards, ideally, their eventual repatriation.
This project follows previous Tasmanian Aboriginal community–TMAG partnership projects: kanalaritja: An Unbroken String (2016–20) and tayenebe: Tasmanian Aboriginal Women’s Fibre Work (2008–12).
A publication was also produced, and in 2024 the project was recognised with ‘Exhibiting Excellence', 'First Nations Project' (joint), and ‘Best in Show’ (joint) awards from AMAGA (Australian Museums and Galleries Association).
