School holiday fun lifts off at TMAG

Four young Lift Off! Festival attendees smile at the camera while colourful smoke billows behind them

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) welcomes children and their families to the seventh edition of its popular Festival for Children and Young People, Lift Off!

This year’s Lift Off! is set to be bigger than ever during the October school holidays, with a range of free or low-cost events and activities for children of all ages centred around the theme ‘twists and turns’.

A highlight of the festival program is TMAG’s new augmented reality (AR) trail: the Hidden Creature Gallery – a first for the Museum using this type of technology. Visitors will be able to search for 25 ‘hidden’ creatures across the TMAG galleries.

Other festival highlights include creating something for the giant feast – a grand banquet table and growing festival mural celebrating food inspired by TMAG’s major exhibition Twist – and an extensive schedule of museum-inspired activities, including the activation of TMAG’s popular children’s gallery mapiya lumi | around here.

Other regular festival programming is returning in 2023, including the School Banner Project, which will see banners created by 13 schools across Tasmania displayed around TMAG’s site, as well as the TMAG Up Late – Silent Disco evening opening of the Museum especially for children aged 10–16.

Everyone is encouraged to head along to the Museum for some great fun this holiday period. TMAG is committed to providing educational and entertaining experiences for Tasmania’s young people.

Lift Off! is supported by the City of Hobart, with additional support from Festivals Australia, Australian Government and The Allport Bequest.

Lift Off! runs from 4–7 October 2023 at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and entry is free. For more information and the full program, visit the Lift Off! page.
