A season of art, history, culture and science at TMAG

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s (TMAG) winter season of engaging new exhibitions continues with the opening of Exposed Lands: 100 Years of Tasmanian Landscape Photography.

Exposed Lands is a survey of 100 years of photographic history depicting Tasmania’s nature, sharing perspectives of the island, Lutruwita, as Aboriginal Country, as well as terrain charted by colonists' exploration, adventure, and exploitation.

The exhibition encompasses images developed from wet-plate processes and albumen prints, original cibachrome prints, as well as contemporary digital prints, and is accompanied by selected photographic equipment from the Tasmanian State Collection. 

Dr David Ashley Kerr, TMAG Head of Art and Exposed Lands Curator said the Tasmanian Musuem and Art Gallery is custodian of a vast collection of photographic material spanning almost the entire history of photography as a medium.  

“We owe it to our audiences to contextualise this as best we can, with Tasmanian landscape photography a logical first step, and plenty more to come,” he said.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Director Ms Mary Mulcahy said the opening of Exposed Lands, along with the recently launched major exhibition Becoming Modern: Mid-century Australian Art, and the upcoming The World of Seashells, form a vibrant and diverse winter program, inviting visitors to discover something new around every corner.

“There’s always something waiting to be discovered at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery,” Ms Mulcahy said.

“This winter, we invite everyone to explore, experience and rediscover the museum through new exhibitions and captivating stories from across the collection, spanning art, history, science and culture.”

TMAG’s winter program of exhibitions is now underway, all with free admission. Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit and discover what’s around the corner at tmag.tas.gov.au.

Becoming Modern: Mid-century Australian Art
Continues until 26 September 2027

Bringing together over 100 works across painting, sculpture and works on paper, this sweeping survey of the emergence of modernism in Australia during the 20th century explores key movements including figuration and abstraction as well as foregrounding the works of Tasmanian women artists.

From 11 July, step into The World of Seashells to discover more about these natural treasures - how molluscs have evolved, how shells grow, what their colours and patterns might reveal – or simply marvel at their extraordinary beauty.
