Event for a Stage
In 2014, Juliana Engberg co-commissioned Tacita Dean’s Event for a Stage for the 19th Biennale of Sydney.
With BAFTA award-winning actor Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones, The Hours) in the leading role, the theatre performance was filmed over four nights at Carriageworks in Sydney, with each performance differing slightly, in part due to Dillane’s wig changes and Dean’s spontaneous direction.
Through splicing together carefully selected shots from all four performances, Dean’s 16mm film version explores the medium of film and her role as director, and the nature of the actor’s presence on stage.
As part of the Tempest exhibition program and Dark Mofo 2016, Juliana will introduce the Australian premiere screening of Dean’s Event for a Stage, offering her insights into this exciting new iteration of the work.
Presented by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in association with Detached Cultural Organisation and Dark Mofo.
